Reading Signs of the Future

What’s this? Instead of many months between posts, it’s only a week? I’m almost as surprised as anyone, though admittedly I was going to attempt getting on a twice-weekly posting schedule. I just waited too long on Tuesday the 5th and was too tired after my writing group (now through 2 critique sessions) to do so. But I knew I wanted to post today, Friday, January 8th, for reasons that are about to become apparent.

Long before I knew today was the birthday of David Bowie, William Hartnell (the First Doctor) or even the King himself, Elvis, starting in 1993 this date took on a new significance for me. Why?

On that day I submitted a (supremely crappy) science-fiction story in my 8th grade English class. While it would end up paling in comparison to its little sibling started just over three months later, for several years my writing efforts focused on this Star Trek ripoff and the characters therein.

I haven’t done anything with this creation of mine for over 20 years, even if the files of the stories have followed me across all the computers I’ve had since then. The only thing I do is watch some sci-fi stuff, this year enjoying some episodes of Babylon 5.

Since I didn’t post Tuesday, I would like to quickly sum up what would have been in that post, which I had forgotten to share last week.

Since 2017 I have been doing a Goodreads reading challenge. (Shameless plug for the widget I have installed that shows you what I’m currently reading, by the way.) I have succeeded each year, though I have altered the number of books toward the end of the challenge to do so, and there have been some years where I’m reading a bunch on the last day to make it. Much like Nano I refuse to concede defeat even if it nearly kills me before midnight.

However, since I discovered that comic books could count, and growing in my love of the medium across a number of titles, I made it a mission to read a comic book every day in 2020, and I’m please to say that I did so. I also read about 85 regular books as well, give or take. Not the best, but not the worst, either. A good literary time was had by all. Would have been easier if the library was open more than just for curbside pickup, but at least we have that right now at all.

Keep on the lookout for more posts from me this year, ones that actually have to do with writing, even!
